Memorandum of association
For the Shock Wave Institute
- Name:
The name of the association will be the International Shock Wave Institute (ISWI)
- Date of formation of the Society
2nd March, 2005
- Registered office:
The registered office shall initially be situated in Sendai, Japan at the following address:
International Shock Wave Institute (ISWI)
Institute of Fluid Science
Tohoku University,
Katahira, Aoba
Sendai
JAPAN
- Organisation:
The International Shock Wave Institute will have a Chairman, General Committee and an Executive Committee both of which will be elected by the members. In the interim period during which it will be established, a provisional committee will be formed without election to determine the establishment of membership, early additions and changes to the rules and regulations, the method of election of the chairman and committees, the officers and their functions and the committee meeting schedules. It is envisaged that full elections will take place before the end of 2006.
- Mission:
To promote international and interdisciplinary collaboration in all areas of shock wave research through the organisation of conferences, awards and honours and to facilitate liaison with other organisations with similar interests and activities.
- Objectives:
The goals of the Institute are:
- To liaise with the organising chairman of relevant symposia and conferences and to promote the range of conferences, symposia and workshops that fall directly in the shock wave area. Examples are the International Symposia on Shock Wave (ISSW), International Colloquia on Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems (ICDERS), Intenational Shock Interaction Symposia (ISIS), the American Physical Society (APS) Topical Group Meeting of Shock in Condensed Matter, etc.
- To liaise with conference organisations in areas in which shock waves and associated techniques play a significant but not the sole role. Examples are the International Conferences of High Speed Photography and Photonics, International Symposia of Flow Visualization, Hypervelocity Impact Symposia, and various fluid mechanics conferences.
- To promote shock wave research in all its forms, unite existing research groups and identify new researchers and research in non-traditional shock wave areas.
- To encourage publication in an appropriate journal and promote it as the principal journal for communication of shock wave research
- To open and maintain shock wave website for related topics which include information on shock wave fundamentals and applications and information about sources of tools for research, as well as providing information about associated conferences.
- To provide a central deposition for shock related data by organizing the following archives:
- Experimental image data archive;
- Archives of past International Shock Tube and Shock Wave Symposia Proceedings and past International Colloquia of Detonation, Explosion, and Reactive Systems;
- Book archive of shock wave related classical text books and hand books which are now out of print;
- Institute report archive;
- Hugoniot data archive;
- Chemical kinetics archive.
- To catalogue the shock wave related experimental facilities available throughout the world, which are either now operational or have existed in the past. This will include design diagrams of some of facilities in order to benefit researchers who are designing a new shock related facility and to standardize the safety design concepts of shock related
- To publish on-line "Who's Who Shock Wave Research" as one of the major platforms for exchanging research information among the ISWI members.
- To award students who have presented excellent papers during the International Shock Wave Symposia.
- Governing Council
The membership and functions are to be determined initially by the Provisional committee. Elections for the General and Executive Committees will take place before July, 2006. The Provisional Committee will determine the initial break up of electorates based on both geographical and research areas.
- Membership
There will be three classes of membership, full, student and corporate. To qualify for student membership, applicants will need to demonstrate that they are currently enrolled in a recognised course. Corporate membership will allow all employees of that company to access the ISWI facilities.
- Fees
Yearly Membership fees which include on-line access to the SWJ and to all available member services.
Full membership: US$75
Student membership: US$35
US$10 without on-line access of SWJ
Corporate membership: US$200
Member services include access to and download of ISWI archival materials, Who's Who in Shock Wave Research when available, 20% discount purchase of Springer books, discount payment of color pages of accepted papers in SWJ. Note that SWJ is currently the journal of ISWI. The $50 to full members and $25 to student member for on-line access of SWJ is a specially reduced price to members. There is no initial joining fee.
- Meetings
A General Meeting of the ISWI will be held in conjunction with a major shock wave conference each year. Possible such meetings are the ISSW and ISIS conferences. All members may vote on issues arising at these meetings. Issues can be raised before the meeting in writing to the Chair or on the floor of the meeting as general business. One responsibility of the general meeting will be the election of the Executive Committee which will serve for a two year cycle.
The Executive Committee shall meet separately at least once per year at a location and time advised to all members. Issues can be raised for the Executive Committee by any member in writing at least 21 days prior to the meeting. These should be transmitted to the general committee representative associated with the member's area of research or location.
- Register of members
The ISWI shall maintain a register of all members.
- Termination of membership
Membership may be terminated at any time by notifying the chair or by death. It shall automatically cease if the dues of the member are in arrears by more the six months unless decided otherwise by the General committee.
- Resolutions
All matters referred to the General Meeting will be decided by a by a majority vote of all members at the first appropriate such meeting. Matters relevant to the executive shall be decided by a majority vote by the committee members at the Executive Committee meetings. If a vote is tied in either of these meetings, the President will have the casting vote.
